3Fun is the biggest app aimed squarely at couples and singles looking for threesomes and open arrangements. It released on iOS in October 2016, it carries 145,717 US App Store ratings at a 4.44 average, and the operator is 3Fun Limited. The company states more than 10 million downloads and around 2.5 million monthly users.
It also has the worst security incident of any app on this site, and we are going to lead with it rather than bury it in a footnote. In August 2019, security researchers found the app was exposing the precise location, photos and private data of its entire user base, then over 1.5 million people. Worse, the flaw let researchers spoof any coordinates and pull sensitive data on users at any location they chose, including government buildings and military bases. One of the researchers described it as the worst security they had seen in a dating app.
The company fixed it, moved to an encrypted database on AWS, and has since publicised a round of safety upgrades. Seven years have passed with no repeat. Whether that is enough for you is your call, and it is the honest catch here.

The 4.44 average is solid for a niche explicit app, and notably higher than HUD’s 4.11.
How 3Fun actually works
3Fun is built around a feature most dating apps do not have: linked couple profiles. Two people can join their accounts so they browse and appear as a pair, which removes the awkwardness of one partner running a solo profile and speaking for both. Singles browse as singles. Couples can approach singles, singles can approach couples, and couples can approach other couples.
The rest is a location-based swipe app. You set what you and your partner are open to, filter, and match. Chat opens on mutual interest, and group chats let all three or four people talk at once rather than routing everything through one person, which is the practical bottleneck in arranging anything with more than two people.
Photos are gated, which matters here more than on a normal app. You control who sees your private album, and given the audience includes plenty of people who are not out about being open, that control is the product as much as the matching is.
Practically: the pool is genuinely international and reasonable in large cities, and thin in small ones. This is a niche within a niche, so expect to travel or wait.
Is 3Fun safe?
This section is the reason to read this page, so we will be direct.
The 2019 breach was severe. Researchers at Pen Test Partners found the app was sending sensitive user data to the phone and letting the phone decide what to display, which meant the underlying data, precise GPS coordinates, private photos, dates of birth, chat data, was retrievable for any user. Because location could be spoofed, anybody could query any place on earth and pull that data on whoever was nearby. Researchers demonstrated it on the White House and on military sites. For an app whose users are frequently not open about their private lives, that is close to the worst possible failure.
What happened after. The company was slow initially, taking weeks to close the holes after being notified on 1 July 2019, but it did fix them. It has since stated that its database is encrypted and hosted on AWS in the US, and it has publicised further safety and verification work. There has been no comparable public incident in the seven years since, and the app has kept growing.
How to weigh it. A company that shipped that flaw once has shown you something about its engineering culture. A company that then fixed it and has run clean for seven years has shown you something too. We are not going to tell you which of those matters more to you.
What we will say is what to do if you use it: assume anything you upload could leak, because that is the correct assumption on every platform and this one has a track record; keep your face out of your public photos if being open would cost you; do not reuse a password from anywhere else; and be aware that precise-location apps are inherently more exposing than profile grids.
