How to Forgive Yourself After Cheating on Your Partner

forgive yourself for cheating

If you cheated on your partner but have come clean and they are willing to give the relationship another try, it’s likely that a lot of guilt will still be with you. If you’re in this situation and don’t know how to forgive yourself after cheating, I have some words that might help you.

Understand you are not a bad person. The fact that you are so remorseful about your indiscretion shows how sorry you truly are. If you were messing around with lots of people behind your partner’s back but didn’t care, then you would need to worry about your character. You need to understand that everyone makes mistakes from time to time, this does not make you a bad person. Even the most honest person in the world has the capability to cheat if the situation was right (or wrong!) Although it’s horrible that it happened, you should see the cheating as a lesson learned and hopefully it was a really valuable one that will help you grow as a person.

Care for yourself and your partner

It’s so important at this point in your relationship, that you take the time to do things with your partner and most importantly communicate. Talk about the cheating if that helps your situation, why you cheated and what you are going to do to make sure it never happens again. Chatting with your partner about every-day things can actually make a big difference to how close you feel to one another. Go out on dates and just enjoy each others company, this can bring the spark back which can only make the relationship stronger. When you make the effort, they will slowly learn to trust you again and as a result, you will learn to trust and forgive yourself. It’s time to love yourself again by eating well, exercising regularly and just working towards the person that you want to be.

Consider counseling

If you are still struggling to get over what happened and you still feel like you cannot forgive yourself, then consider going to a counselor/therapist who will be able to offer you further advice on the matter. Sometimes, talking to an unbiased third party can help get everything off your chest. It will be like a weight has been lifted and you might feel some of the guilt instantly go away. Perhaps your partner doesn’t want to talk about the cheating which is understandable, so seeing a professional even once or twice is going to help you tremendously. You could also try couples counseling if you feel this would help and if he or she is on board. Remember not to hold anything back and don’t be ashamed, what you are doing is really brave.

When cheating occurs in a relationship, it is possible to get past it but ONLY if your partner forgives you and, equally important, if you forgive yourself. Now that you know some steps for moving on, put these into action and hopefully your current situation will go from shaky to healthy once again. Unfortunately, not all relationships are salvageable and if your gut instinct is telling you that it’s over, then maybe it is.
