— In-Depth HER Dating App Review—
HER is a mobile dating and community app for lesbian and bisexual women. First launched nationwide in 2015, it has since become immensely popular within the lesbian community, not only in the U.S., but also worldwide. It exists solely as a mobile app — so it cannot be accessed via a desktop web browser. The HER app is available for iPhone and Android devices and can be downloaded from iTunes and Google Play. It is also possible to obtain a download link directly to your phone from the app’s informational website, WeAreHer.com.
— Registration on HER —
Initial registration on HER is free. You must first download the app to your tablet or phone. You will then be required to conclude the registration process by linking either your Facebook or Instagram profile to the account. There is no other option given. This might give some people pause for thought regarding privacy concerns. From our point of view, we are not fond of such mandatory link ups to social media channels. On the positive side, the HER app will not post to your timeline, ever. The founder of HER has stated that having users link their accounts to an outside social media account is entirely for the purposes of authenticating that the users are real. In that regard, HER has been successful. During our evaluation we never encountered what we thought to be a fake profile — all seemed genuine.
— The Supporting Website —
Yes, while the HER app can only be used as an app on a tablet or smartphone, the service does have a stand alone website that can be accessed on a desktop. Mind you, it only serves to provide you with information about the app, such as FAQs, terms of service etc. One section of this traditional website is interesting in its own regard. That is the blog section of WeAreHer.com. It is filled with articles useful to those using the HER app, it provides information on new features, and also offers general information related to the lesbian dating lifestyle.
— The Community on HER —
The HER app gives its users access to a wide variety of ways to interact with other members. One of its purposes is to provide a venue for like-minded women to find each other. This can be for purposes of casual conversation, hookups or for finding a partner for a long-term relationship. The focus is not strictly on dating, but it is one the most significant reasons why users join the app.
The other function of the HER app is to promote the concept of community among its members. Since the app allows for segmentation by geographic location, it is easy to get a feel for what other lesbian and bisexual women are doing in terms of entertainment, dining, and other real world social activities. It is common for members to post upcoming activities in order to invite other members to attend. During our testing we found this section of the app to be lively and engaged. The community feel is genuine and resolute.
The “Questions” feature allows members to post a question about anything to the entire worldwide HER community. We were skeptical at first about a feature that was so broad in scope and open to the entire membership base. At least in terms of providing substantive replies and lively interaction — we had our doubts. That is why we were pleasantly surprised to find the engagements that the “Questions” section sparked were fun, helpful and captivating. We give HER kudos for this recent addition.
— Using the HER App for Dating —
One of the ways that HER members use the app for dating purposes is to simply become immersed within the community feel of the app and — through casual conversations online — lead up to personal meetings. This emulates the way two people would develop a relationship in real life. This method is passive and slow, but for some members — especially if they are bisexual women who are curious, or otherwise uncertain about a relationship with another woman — it can be the perfect conduit for finding that special person in their life at their own pace.
Of course, some women will prefer a more active option — one that offers faster results. HER also offers a solution for this more instantaneous results-oriented approach to dating. It uses the swipe method popularized by other online dating apps. You receive the profiles of other members that match your search criteria in terms of age range, sexual identity, location, etc. You then can “like” the profile by swiping right or pass on the profile by swiping left.
Those members whose profiles you like will then be given the opportunity to “like” you back. When a mutual like occurs, then the both of you can engage in a conversation via the app. When the app detects that a chat thread has gone cold — usually when more than 36 hours have passed since the last text exchange — it will prompt you to keep the chat going. You can ignore these reminders, of course — especially if the person turned out not to be the type you were looking for.
— HER App Premium Version —
The free version of HER is fully functional in terms of engaging in conversation with other members. From our perspective, it is one of the most robust free dating apps on the market. There is, however, a premium version of HER that is also available. This comes at a cost of $14.99 per month, or $89.99 for the entire year.
The premium version increases the number of daily swipes that you can have on a daily basis. During our testing with the free version, we found that we were sometimes limited to 25 swipes, other times 15. We could not ascertain what caused this disparity. The premium version does away with any swipe limitations — making them unlimited.
The premium version also allows you to identify members that are actively online when you are connected. It also allows you to change your location. In the free version, this is tied to the geolocation of your device. We found that being able to change your location can be a useful feature when you are planning to travel. It allows you to establish contact and potential personal meetings with people well in advance of your departure.
