Honolulu Hookups: Your Oahu Radius Ends At The Water

Honolulu hookups, the short version
  • Dating apps: Tinder, with Hinge next to it. Tinder takes 40 percent of what this city looks up across the four names and leads every town in this market that registered more than one name. It has also not had a good word out of a single resident this year. That is why Hinge goes on the phone at the same time and not later.
  • Casual sites: AdultFriendFinder. Members write out what they came for, in the profile, before anyone sends a message. On an island where the wrong match can be a 35 minute drive over the Pali, that is the part worth paying for.
  • Gay men: Grindr. Not because Honolulu chose it. Nobody here names an app out loud at all, and Grindr is the one with enough people on it to make a proximity grid mean something in the few Waikiki blocks that hold the bars. Sniffies is worth a second tab, browser only, no sign-up.
  • Queer women: HER. Thin on one island, and still the only queer-specific roster with anybody on it. The better answer is a room: BYTE at @byte.hnl, and the womxn’s night at Velvet on Kapiolani Boulevard. Widen with a mainstream app on the queer filter when HER dries up.
  • Going out: three queer bars sit within a few blocks of each other in Waikiki, on Kapahulu, Seaside and Lewers. Chinatown is the resident drinking grid, and Downtown, three blocks over, is not.
Tonight: set your distance filter by drive time, not by miles. Kailua is 14 miles from Waikiki and about 35 minutes over the Pali, and H-1 can add another half hour at either peak. Set a wide radius and the app quietly starts showing you people who are an hour away in traffic.

The dating app Honolulu searches for, and the one nobody here recommends

Ask this city how to meet somebody and you will not get an app back. You get a queer hiking group, the climbing gym in Kakaako, a Discord, a bottle shop at SALT, a beach cleanup. Honolulu argues about its own dating scene constantly and it does it without much reference to the apps: Bumble comes up now and then, Hinge now and then, and in the long resident argument about dating in Honolulu this year, the single time Tinder gets named at all, it is on a list of things to delete.

So take the pick below for what it is. The search data is clear. The people who live here are not behind it.

Tinder in Honolulu is the pick, and the confidence is low. Inside the city it holds 40 percent of the four-app interest, with Hinge four points back, and it also leads Mililani and Kihei over on Maui, the only other towns in this market where more than one app cleared Google’s floor. Three readings pointing the same way, against a run of comments pointing away from it that never agree on a replacement.

Run Hinge beside it, and not as an afterthought. Four points is nothing, and the last time two residents said out loud where they met somebody who actually lives on this island, back in 2024, both of them said Hinge. Bumble in Honolulu sits third and reads higher out in Mililani, the only place on Oahu where it does.

All eight towns in this market that returned any value on the four apps. Ninety-eight were pulled and ninety came back with nothing, which means those towns fell under Google’s reporting threshold, not that nobody there is searching. A row showing one app at 100 means one app cleared the floor and the normalising did the rest, so it is not a town that uses a single app. Hilo also returned Plenty of Fish, at under 1 percent, too small to draw. Honolulu is the only row where all four registered. This measures search interest, not installs or users.

The other thing in that chart is how far apart the dots are. Kahului and Kihei are on Maui and Hilo is on Hawaii Island. They share a television market with Honolulu and they are a flight away, not a drive. Kailua, Kaneohe, Kapolei, Ewa Beach, Waipahu, Wahiawa, Makakilo, Nanakuli, Waianae and Haleiwa all returned nothing at all, so there is no reading to give you on any of them in either direction.

If you are picking on what Honolulu looks up
Tinder Leads all three multi-app towns

Forty percent of what Honolulu looks up across the four names, and the lead in Mililani and Kihei as well. The catch is that the lead is four points over Hinge in the city and nobody local will vouch for it, so it is where the searching goes rather than where the endorsement is.

How to run it here: widen past the edge of town and you are adding Kailua, Kaneohe and the west side, which are between 30 and 60 minutes of driving. Decide whether you would make that drive before you set the number, not after somebody replies.

Honolulu hookup sites, and the drive you would rather not waste

There are two clusters on this island you can cross on foot, Chinatown and Waikiki, and they are about three miles apart. Everything else on Oahu is a car. Kailua is roughly 35 minutes over the Pali, Haleiwa nearer an hour, and H-1 adds to both at either peak. So the price of finding out that you and somebody else wanted different things is not an awkward hour here. It is the drive there and the drive home. A Honolulu dating site will happily put somebody twenty miles away at the top of your screen and call it close, and twenty miles here can be the far side of a mountain range.

AdultFriendFinder is the lane where none of that guessing happens. These are the biggest casual sex sites there are.

If you would rather know before you leave the house
AdultFriendFinder

Honolulu goes out early. Pau hana is the anchor slot, Mai Tai’s at Ala Moana Center opens its happy hour at 4pm, Honolulu Beerworks over in Kalihi locks up at 8pm,15 and outside a handful of Waikiki and Chinatown addresses very little is still trading at 1am. This lane does not keep the island’s hours, which makes the late evening usable here instead of dead.

Worth doing before you start: write your own profile text properly, in your own words. The whole value of this lane on Oahu is that two people can settle in a minute whether the drive is on, and that does not happen if either side left the box empty.

Gay bars in Honolulu: three Waikiki blocks, and an app picked on size

The gay bars in Waikiki, three of them, sit within a few blocks of each other, and that one fact does most of the work a district would do. Hula’s Bar and Lei Stand is on the second floor of the Waikiki Grand at 134 Kapahulu Avenue, open daily 11am to 2am, with live music from 6pm most nights, open mic on Mondays, drag, and a dance floor that runs to close.7 Tapa’s Waikiki is at 407 Seaside Avenue, upstairs, daily 2pm to 1:30am, and calls itself in its own words the neighbourhood LGBTQ+ bar for locals and visitors both, with karaoke on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm, Fetish Fridays on first Fridays, and the Aloha Bears beer bust on most Sunday afternoons.8 Bacchus Waikiki is at 408 Lewers Street, also upstairs, with DJs nightly, trivia and drag on Wednesdays, and a Boys in Briefs party on the first Saturday of the month from 10pm.9 A small warning that will save you a wasted trip: two other Bacchus web addresses are still floating around and neither works, one dead and one showing a notice from 2023. The bar is open. The old links are not.

The fourth is in Chinatown. Scarlet Honolulu, 80 South Pauahi Street, is the club with the drag and the pineapple stage, and it is reported as running Friday and Saturday nights only with a $20 door. Those hours come from listings rather than from the venue itself, so check before you go, and do not turn up on a Wednesday expecting a door that opens.

The gay club in Chinatown, its two listed nights, and what is in front of a federal judge

Scarlet applied for an extended-hours cabaret licence on 17 March 2025. More than 500 days later it had not been approved, and on 21 August 2026 the club filed a federal civil rights suit alleging that the Honolulu Liquor Commission breached a January 2025 settlement worth $670,000, delayed its applications, restricted its access to records and singled it out for enforcement, while at least 17 applications filed after its own were approved.6 That is the club’s account and none of it has been tested in court. It matters to you for one reason: this club’s opening hours are the thing being fought over, so a national list telling you Chinatown has a gay club open all week is describing a different year.

Grindr in Honolulu gets it on size, and on nothing this city said

Grindr is the pick and it is the pick on size. Gay Honolulu does not talk about apps. Nobody says which one he opens, for it or against it, so there is no local verdict to report and anybody telling you there is has made it up. Grindr has the install base to hold a grid together, and in Waikiki, where three bars sit inside a few blocks, a distance sort has something real to sort. Push that grid past the two clusters and it degrades quickly, because five miles as the crow flies over here can be the far side of a mountain range.

Sniffies is the second tab, and that is a point about the tool, not a report about this city. It has no iPhone app. It opens in a browser and asks for no account at all. On an island where everybody turns out to know everybody, some men will want that and some will not care.

If you are looking for men on this island
Grindr Install base, not a local verdict

Picked because nobody here has picked anything out loud, and because the three Waikiki bars sit close enough together that a proximity grid does real work in that quarter mile. No dating app sponsors Honolulu Pride at any tier, and neither company has published a word about this city.

The Oahu catch: the distance number lies here more than it does on the mainland. Somebody eight miles away can be over the Pali or out past the airport, which is a real evening’s driving. Sort by distance, then read the place name before you agree to anything.

Off the apps, the answers this city gives its own are consistent and not one of them is a bar: Oahu Queer Hiking, the queer climbing group at HiClimb in Kakaako, the Cafe Villamor Discord, Village Bottle Shop at SALT, the 808 Cleanups crew, and as a bar people call queer friendly, Proof Social Club. Nobody agrees on which district Proof is in, which tells you plenty about how blurred Chinatown and Downtown are in the local mind, so check the address yourself before you head out.

Honolulu Pride 2026, this island’s gay pride weekend, is Saturday 17 October. The parade forms up at Magic Island and steps off at 3pm down Kalakaua Avenue through Waikiki, feeding into a free festival at the Waikiki Shell from 5pm.13 Kalakaua closes for it, which reshapes the whole of Waikiki for the day.

Lesbian bars in Honolulu: there is no bar, but there is an address

People search for a lesbian bar in Honolulu every month and this island does not have one. It has two other things instead, and women who live here name both of them without being asked.

BYTE, at @byte.hnl. A roving sapphic party rather than a venue, curated by two Kanaka Maoli organisers plus Yobo by the account’s own description, with a run of dated parties through 2026 and a pool party advertised in the bio for 17 October, which is Pride Saturday.12 Because it moves, the account is the only reliable way to find out where the next one is. Queer women here were passing this account around a year ago and they are still passing it around now, which is the sort of staying power a one-off does not have.

Velvet, 1726 Kapiolani Boulevard, second floor. Open Friday and Saturday, 9:30pm to 2am,10 and it hosts a recurring wlw night for the womxn, with instances on 5 December 2025, 16 January, 6 February and 5 June 2026.11 It is not monthly and there is no confirmed next date, so watch the organiser page rather than pencilling anything in. Note where it is. Kapiolani Boulevard is the Ala Moana corridor, a couple of miles inland of the hotel strip, and when women in this city answer this question the address they give is never in Waikiki.

If drinking is not the point, the Queer Women Initiative run by the Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation is the other name that keeps coming up. It held a free business expo and panel on 29 July 2026, and it runs occasionally rather than on a standing date. There is also a Hawaii Queer Womxn group on Facebook that gets passed to newcomers regularly.

If the queer women’s grid keeps coming up empty
HER The queer-specific roster

Picked on size, and honestly on size alone, because queer women in Honolulu do not recommend apps to each other. Asked where to go, they answer with a room, an account or a group, every time. Expect HER to be thin on one island, and put a mainstream app on the queer filter next to it, because on Oahu there is no next city to widen into.

Do this first: follow the account and the venue before you judge the app. BYTE and the Velvet night are dated, addressed and real, and either will put you in a room faster than a thin grid will.

The four Honolulu picks compared, and what each one runs into on Oahu

Oahu hookups and Honolulu hookups are the same question here, because the county line is the coastline. There is no next city to widen into, so every pick below is judged on how it behaves inside one closed island market rather than on how big it is nationally.

Oahu and Honolulu by the numbers, and which Honolulu each figure means

There is no incorporated City of Honolulu, which is why national write-ups get the population wrong. There is Urban Honolulu, the census place, meaning the strip of city along the south shore. And there is Honolulu County, which is the whole island of Oahu and is also the entire metro area, to the digit. Two different questions, and both of them get called Honolulu.

Honolulu at a glance
American Community Survey, 2024 one-year release, US Census Bureau, unless another vintage is named
344,977
Urban Honolulu, the census place1
998,747
Honolulu County, the island of Oahu, and the metro2
42.8
median age in the census place, 40.3 across the island1
40.5%
of men aged 15 and up have never married, against 34.3% of women1
Every figure here carries a margin of error. The never-married gap between men and women clears its margin on both releases and in both geographies, so that one is solid.

Two more that change how you set an app up. Density. The census place holds 5,691 people per square mile across 60.6 square miles of land, while the island averages 1,662 across 600.8.12 A radius that feels generous in town covers a lot of empty ground once it clears the ridge. The sex split. Across Oahu, men edge it: the census sex ratio sits at 101.4 on the one-year release and 101.9 on the five-year, and both clear their margin. Inside the census place the two releases disagree by less than the survey error around them, so anybody telling you Honolulu has more women than men is quoting a number that will not hold still.

On ethnicity, a note rather than a headline. Asian alone and not Hispanic is the largest group in the census place, at 49.3 percent on the one-year release and 51.8 percent on the five-year, so the two releases cannot agree on whether it is a majority.1 Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone is 7.9 percent on the five-year, and 18.6 percent counting everyone who reported it alongside another race, which is the figure most write-ups mean and almost none of them label. There is no Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander dating app, and nobody should pretend there is.

Chinatown, Waikiki and the Honolulu district that empties at five

The skyline in every photograph of this city is Downtown, and Downtown at 9pm on a Saturday is nobody. It is the capitol, the courts and the banks. Office vacancy in the central business district sat at 12.8 percent in late 2024, Walmart, Ross and Longs all closed their downtown stores, and the council member who represents the area describes it after hours as dormant and quiet.3 The bars are three blocks away in Chinatown, on Hotel Street, Bethel Street, Nuuanu Avenue and Pauahi Street, which is the compact walkable grid residents actually drink in and where police figures for the Chinatown beat show violent crime down over five years.4 Residents mix the two up as often as visitors do.

Chinatown lost something this year. Smith’s Union Bar on North Hotel Street closed for good on 1 June 2026 after 92 years, when the lease was not renewed.5 It is still sitting on plenty of lists nobody has updated. The reliable monthly date in that grid is First Friday, the gallery walk across Downtown and Chinatown, when the galleries stay open and the grid fills up with people who came for something other than a drink.

Elsewhere: Kakaako is towers and food, with SALT at 691 Auahi Street as the hub, and the brewery every guide still puts there has gone. Honolulu Beerworks left Cooke Street and reopened at 1632 Hart Street in Kalihi on 10 May 2025, and it closes at 8pm.15 Ala Moana is a shopping centre that doubles as a going-out answer, because Mai Tai’s sits on the fourth floor terrace at 1450 Ala Moana Boulevard with live island music nightly, no cover and free parking. Kaimuki along Waialae Avenue is a restaurant strip with a handful of small bars rather than a night out. Moiliili and Puck’s Alley, at University Avenue and King Street, make up the near-campus cluster for UH Manoa. And the train does not join any of it up yet: Skyline reached the airport and Middle Street on 16 October 2025 and is not due into town until 2031.

One seasonal thing, if you spend your evenings on a Waikiki grid. The island held an average of 123,616 visitors a day in January 2026 and 93,544 in May.14 That count is island-wide, not a Waikiki figure, but thirty thousand people a day is enough to change who turns up on your screen in that district between winter and late spring.

Honolulu dating scene at a glance. Urban Honolulu census place population 344,977 against 998,747 across the island of Oahu, median age, the never-married split, men against women across Honolulu County, and which dating app leads in each of the 8 towns in the Honolulu market that returned search data, drawn from the 98 that were pulled.

Honolulu and Oahu, asked and answered

Which app should I actually open in Honolulu?

Inside Honolulu the four split Tinder 40 percent, Hinge 36, Bumble 17 and Plenty of Fish 7, over the twelve months to September 2026, and Tinder also leads Mililani and Kihei, the only other towns in this market where more than one app registered. That is what people look up. It is not what they endorse. When residents talk about apps at all, Bumble and Hinge get the occasional good word, and in this year’s long argument about the dating scene here, the one time Tinder is named at all, it is on a list of things to delete. The last two residents to say where they met somebody local, back in 2024, both said Hinge. So run both for a fortnight and judge it off your own inbox, because this city has not settled it out loud.

Is the Honolulu dating scene as bad as people here say it is?

Residents say it constantly, and most of this page is the reason why. Oahu is one island of just under a million people with no next city to widen into, so a filter set too wide stops adding people and starts adding driving. Dating in Honolulu also runs on a short clock, with pau hana as the anchor slot and very little still trading at 1am outside a handful of Waikiki and Chinatown addresses. And when somebody asks this city how to meet people, the answer it gives its own is almost never an app. It is a hiking group, a climbing gym, a Discord, a bottle shop at SALT, a beach cleanup. Whether that reads as terrible or simply as small depends on what you are comparing it to. What it means in practice is that the room is worth more here than the roster.

Are there any lesbian bars in Honolulu?

No. There is no permanent lesbian bar on Oahu. What there is instead: BYTE, a roving sapphic party on Instagram at @byte.hnl, curated by two Kanaka Maoli organisers, which throws pool parties and club nights a few times a year and advertised its next one for 17 October 2026. And Velvet, at 1726 Kapiolani Boulevard on the second floor, open Friday and Saturday from 9:30pm to 2am, which hosts a recurring wlw night for the womxn. That night ran on 5 December 2025 and again in January, February and June of 2026, so it is several times a year rather than monthly, and the venue’s own organiser page is where the next date appears. For something with no bar attached, the Queer Women Initiative of the Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation runs occasional events, most recently a free expo and panel on 29 July 2026.

Where are the gay bars in Honolulu?

Four to know about, in two places. Three are gay bars in Waikiki, within a few blocks of each other: Hula’s Bar and Lei Stand at 134 Kapahulu Avenue, open daily 11am to 2am; Tapa’s Waikiki at 407 Seaside Avenue, daily 2pm to 1:30am; and Bacchus Waikiki at 408 Lewers Street, with DJs every night. All three are upstairs venues. The fourth is Scarlet Honolulu at 80 South Pauahi Street in Chinatown, which is reported as opening Friday and Saturday nights only with a $20 cover while its application for extended hours sits in dispute with the Liquor Commission. A guide listing a Chinatown gay club open midweek is describing an earlier year.

Is Waikiki or Chinatown the better night out?

It depends who you want to be standing next to. Waikiki holds three of the four queer venues and stays open latest, and two of those bars describe themselves as neighbourhood bars for locals as much as for visitors, so writing the whole district off as a tourist trap is wrong. Chinatown is the compact resident grid, walkable across Hotel, Bethel, Nuuanu and Pauahi, and it is where people who live here go when they are not working. What you should not do is confuse Chinatown with Downtown, which starts a few blocks away and is empty after 5pm and all weekend.

Do the apps work on the rest of Oahu, outside Honolulu?

They work, but the data cannot tell you much about them. Of 98 towns pulled across this market, only eight returned any search value on the four apps, and Kailua, Kaneohe, Kapolei, Ewa Beach, Waipahu, Wahiawa, Waianae and the North Shore all came back blank, which means they fell below Google’s reporting floor rather than that nobody there is using anything. The one place outside town where more than one app registered is Mililani, where Tinder takes 42 percent and Bumble reads higher than it does in the city. The bigger point is drive time. Kailua is about 35 minutes over the Pali, Haleiwa closer to an hour, and H-1 adds to both, so a radius that pulls in the whole island is pulling in evenings you will not want to spend.

When is Honolulu Pride 2026?

Honolulu gay pride weekend lands on Saturday 17 October 2026. The parade assembles at Magic Island and starts at 3pm, runs down Kalakaua Avenue through Waikiki, and rolls into a free festival at the Waikiki Shell from 5pm, under the theme Ho’omau. Kalakaua Avenue closes for it. Worth knowing for one reason beyond the day itself: BYTE has advertised a pool party for the same date.

I joined my first paid hookup site in 2015 and I have not stopped testing them since. A city page runs on the same rule as a review here: a figure goes in only when the release that published it is linked underneath it, and a bar gets named only when somebody could confirm it is still trading. Where neither was possible, this page says so rather than guessing.
