Portland Hookups: Two Apps Tied, Four Gay Bars Left, No Lesbian Bar In PDX
- Hinge is the one to open inside Portland, Oregon itself. The four-app search split here is a dead heat, Tinder 37% against Hinge 36%, and one point is not a lead. What breaks the tie is that the Portlanders who name an app that is working for them name Hinge. It holds up across the inner metro too, while Tinder’s outright wins sit in towns an hour out.
- AdultFriendFinder is the adult-site lane, and Ashley Madison is the attached one. Explicit photos on profiles as standard, cams and video, groups and kinks, and people writing out what they want instead of hinting at it for a week. Both are paid, which does the first round of sorting. Ashley Madison is here because married-couple households run 47.52% across the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA metro against 34.33% inside Portland itself.
- Grindr for men, Sniffies second. Portland lost roughly a third of its queer bars in a year, and the four rooms still trading sit within a few walkable Old Town blocks, which is exactly the footprint a distance-sorted grid is good at. Sniffies is a browser tool with no iPhone app, so do not go looking for it in the App Store.
- HER for queer women, but the calendar beside it does more work. Portland has had no lesbian bar since Doc Marie’s closed on 31 October 2025. What the city runs instead is a queer events calendar listing the sapphic nights week by week, plus The Sports Bra on NE Broadway. HER is the dedicated app with the install base. It is not a local favourite, because nobody here is arguing about apps at all.
- Old Town Chinatown is the late district, not the Pearl. The Pearl looks like the nightlife answer. It is galleries, restaurants and condos. The clubs, the drag and the gay bars are a few blocks east, between Burnside and Davis, running to Oregon’s 2:30 a.m. close.
One point separates the top two dating apps in Portland, Oregon
Inside the city of Portland, search interest across the four big dating apps splits Tinder 37%, Hinge 36%, Bumble 18% and Plenty of Fish 9%.3 That is a tie with a rounding error’s worth of daylight in it. Read it as “Tinder leads Portland” and you are treating one point on a normalised row as a result. It is not one. Search interest is what people in this market look up, not what is installed on their phones, and it is the only app-by-app figure that exists at town level.
So the tie gets broken somewhere else, and here it breaks toward Hinge. The people who name an app that is actually working for them name Hinge, in the present tense, and they say it about Portland rather than about apps in general. Tinder turns up as a joke, a complaint, or a memory. One man paying for Tinder Platinum asked publicly why he was getting nothing back, and the Portland women who answered told him flatly that they are not on it.
The counterweight, and it is a real one: the strongest thing anybody here says for Tinder is that they met a partner on it and are still together five years later. That is a fact about Portland in roughly 2021, not about your stack tonight.
I am not going to dress this up as a landslide. The chart is level and the talk is thin. What holds the pick up is that the two do not fight each other. Hinge runs level with Tinder in Tigard and Aloha, takes 41% in Lake Oswego and 36% in Beavercreek, and it is the only app that registered at all in Camas, Washington. Tinder’s outright wins are Newberg, and Boardman about 160 miles east, which is a Portland television market town and not a metro one. Wherever this metro actually lives, Hinge is on the board.
Prompt-led profiles, a slower pace, and the app Portlanders reach for when somebody asks which one works here. It is strongest where the metro is dense, which means the inner east side, the close-in north and northeast, and the west side suburbs out to Beaverton and Hillsboro.
Sixteen towns returned data, and two of them are in Washington
Two things there matter before you set anything up. Camas, Washington is the one town where a single app registered, and that app was Hinge. Vancouver, Washington, eight minutes over the bridge and part of the same metro, is the flattest row in the set. Nothing owns that town. And Plenty of Fish is an outer-ring app here, holding double figures in Gresham, Vancouver and a handful of the small towns while it sits at 9% in Portland itself.
Portland casual encounters: the lane where people write it on the profile
AdultFriendFinder and the sites in its category are adult sites, not dating apps, and the difference is the whole point. Explicit photos on profiles as standard, cams and video, groups, kinks and couples, and members stating what they are after in plain words. They are paid, which is a filter in itself. These are the biggest casual sex sites there are.
On a dating app you swipe, talk for a few days and work out what somebody meant. Here the intent is on the profile before you type anything. You will know within a minute of looking whether that is for you. A Portland hookup either starts from a stated intent or it starts from a guess, and that is the choice this lane is really about.
Photos, video, groups, kinks, and a search that filters on what people have actually written rather than on what you hope they meant. Portland is a metro of 2.5 million that runs from Hillsboro across the Columbia into Vancouver, Washington, so the pool is a metro pool, not a neighbourhood one.2
The city and the ring around it are two different places on paper. Married-couple households are 34.33% of households inside Portland and 47.52% across the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA metro.12 Three quarters of this metro lives outside the city limits, and 21.00% of it lives in Washington state.2 That is the shape this site is built for: people who come into the core rather than live in it.
Gay bars in Portland, Oregon: five closures, four rooms still open
Portland lost roughly a third of its queer bars inside a year. Five closures were announced in the twelve months to October 2025, including Scandals on what is now SW Harvey Milk Street, which had been open 46 years when it shut on 21 September 2025.4 Its owner said he intends to open a new all-ages queer space on NE Alberta. That is an intention. Alberta does not have a gay bar yet.
There is no scattered map to learn. Every gay bar and club still trading in Portland sits in or beside Old Town Chinatown, in the blocks around West Burnside that get called the Burnside Triangle, or the Harvey Milk District after the street. Here is what is open, all of it walkable end to end:
- CC Slaughters, 219 NW Davis, an LGBTQ+ nightclub since 1981, running a full week: drag bingo, EDM night, amateur night, Trans-UHH-Licious on Thursdays, live music Fridays and karaoke Sundays.8
- Silverado, 610 NW Couch, gay men’s bar with dancers over two floors, publishing 9 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. daily.9
- Darcelle XV, 208 NW 3rd, drag cabaret running since 1967, with shows on the calendar through September 2026. Over 21.10
- Stag PDX, 317 NW Broadway, seven nights a week with dancers and a Sunday drag brunch, closing at 2:30 a.m.11
After all that closing, Portland men did not declare the bars over and move online. When word went round downtown in the summer of 2026 that another gay bar was coming, the reaction was relief. The apps carry the weekdays and the rooms still carry the weekend. Portland also has a reputation among gay men for being cold to newcomers, a city of friend groups that closed years ago, and that is a big part of why the phone does so much of the introducing here.
Grindr is the word men here use without explaining it, and the four venues still trading are close enough together that a distance-sorted grid is doing real work rather than showing you the next county.
Portland, Oregon has no lesbian bar, so the answer is a calendar
Doc Marie’s at 203 SE Grand Ave was the city’s only self-defined lesbian bar and it closed on 31 October 2025, the fifth Portland LGBTQ+ bar closure announced within a year.4 Nothing has replaced it as a room. Anyone still sending you to a Portland lesbian bar is working from an old list.
What replaced it is a calendar. Queer Social Club has been running Portland events since 2022, community submitted and manually reviewed, with a weekly email, and it is what people here hand a newcomer.5 August 2026 alone carries Butch Hang, Sapphic Singles over in Vancouver, Washington, Sapphic Speed Dating at Peacock PDX, 1400 SE Morrison, on Wednesday 12 August from 6:30pm, Filthy Dyke, Sapphic Summer 4Ever, Sassy’s Sapphic Strip and Hussy.5 Those are dates, not a standing timetable. The nights move between venues, so the calendar is more use to you than any single address. Note the words while you are there: Portland says queer, sapphic and dyke far more than it says lesbian.
One room keeps getting named, and the city argues about it in public. The Sports Bra at 2512 NE Broadway is a women’s sports bar and it does not call itself a lesbian bar.6 Portlanders called it one anyway the moment Doc Marie’s announced, and the pushback was immediate and fair, because the venue never asked for the label. Both halves are true, and neither changes the fact that it is where people go. Women’s sports is the other standing answer here. The Thorns have a queer following the city takes for granted, and the Portland Fire’s first WNBA season landed in 2026 with the local alt-weekly putting the team in its Queer Issue.7
The dedicated queer women’s app, and the one with an install base big enough to put people in range across a metro of 2.5 million that reaches from Hillsboro to Vancouver, Washington. One Portland woman named Lex in July 2026, and she was talking about making friends on it rather than dating.

Who is actually here
2,537,070 in the metro, Hillsboro to Vancouver, Washington
against 40.16% of women
The never-married gap is the steadiest number on this page. It holds in the city, in Multnomah County and across the metro, on both releases: 46.97% of Portland men aged 15 and over have never married against 40.16% of women.1 That is marital status, not relationship status, so it is not a count of single people. The direction holds everywhere you look.
Age band by age band it gets more local. In the city of Portland, the 20 to 34 group runs 94.0 men per 100 women on the five-year release.1 That is a city figure and it describes the city only. Widen the boundary to the whole Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA metro, seven counties across two states, and the same age band runs 101.8 men per 100 women on the same release.2 Which one describes your evening depends on where you are standing.
The rest of it: 39.06% of Portland city households are one person living alone, and nonfamily households outnumber family households inside the city, which reverses across the metro.12 The city runs 4,771 people per square mile. The metro runs 379.12 A dense core inside a very spread region, and that is why the app picture changes so fast once you leave.
Old Town is late-night PDX, and the Pearl only looks like it
Visitors get told to avoid Old Town Chinatown and then get pointed at the Pearl District, which is backwards for a night out. The Pearl is brick warehouses, galleries, restaurants and expensive condos. Good dinner, not a club run. The tight grid between West Burnside and NW Davis, roughly 2nd across to Broadway, is where the late bars, the dance floors and the drag actually are, and it is the one part of Portland where you can walk between several 2:30 a.m. rooms without moving a car. Old Town is also the centre of the city’s homeless services, which is the honest reason its reputation and its function have drifted apart. Both things are true of the same six blocks.
Elsewhere: the Central Eastside and Buckman are warehouse venues and DJ nights, wide industrial blocks rather than a street you stroll. North Mississippi Avenue and Alberta are neighbourhood evening strips. Hawthorne is famous and is a daytime retail street with bars on it, not a bar district. And there is no student quarter at all. Portland State is woven into downtown offices, Reed sits out in the far southeast, Lewis and Clark is up in the southwest hills and OHSU is on a hill you reach by aerial tram, so the 20 to 34 crowd is spread across neighbourhood strips instead of piled onto one college row.
Two last calls on one river
Oregon licensed premises may serve until 2:30 a.m.12 Washington stops at 2:00 a.m.13 Vancouver, Washington is in the same metro, on the other bank, so one region runs two closing times about eight minutes’ drive apart. Do not build an evening around that. The crossing people actually make is southbound, into Portland, because there is more here, and nobody organises a night around the extra half hour. It is the structure of a two-state metro, not a plan.
Why there are so many strip clubs
It is a legal artefact. Oregon’s 1859 constitution carries a free expression clause broader than the federal First Amendment, and in 1987 the Oregon Supreme Court held in State v. Henry that Article I, section 8 protects expression outside a narrow set of historical exceptions, which put nude dancing under constitutional protection as speech. Oregon also bars cities from zoning adult businesses differently from any other business, so the zoning tool that thins these venues out does not exist here.14 I am not going to give you a count. There is no licensing category to count, and the numbers in circulation are old directory scrapes that disagree with each other.
The one date outsiders get wrong
Portland Pride is in July, not June. The Waterfront Festival runs Saturday 18 July 2026 from noon and Sunday 19 July 2026 from 11:30 a.m. at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, with the parade at 11 a.m. on the Sunday, starting at the North Park Blocks and finishing at the festival.15 The Rose Festival takes the same waterfront from 22 May to 28 June 2026.16 On both of those weekends downtown and Old Town are busy and nothing behaves normally.

Where is the gay neighborhood in Portland, Oregon?

Hinge is materially weaker there than in Portland, where it takes 36%, and Plenty of Fish is materially stronger. Camas, a little further east on the same side of the river, is the one town where a single app registered and that app was Hinge. The practical point for anybody near the Columbia is that a distance-sorted stack pulls profiles from two states at once, so set your radius on purpose.
What time do bars close in Portland?
Oregon allows licensed premises to serve until 2:30 a.m., and Old Town venues including Silverado and Stag PDX publish exactly that closing time on their own sites. Across the river in Vancouver, Washington, which is part of the same metro area, service stops at 2:00 a.m. under Washington state rules. The traffic that crosses the river at night runs southbound into Portland, because there is more to do on the Oregon side.
Where do Portland hookups actually start, a room or an app?
Mostly an app. Hookups in Portland start on a phone more often than they start in a room, and PDX is blunt about why. The city has a reputation among gay men and among newcomers generally for being cold to strangers, a place where friend groups formed years ago and do not open easily, so meeting people tends to start on a phone. The exception is queer women, who have built events to route around exactly that: a weekly calendar, speed dating nights, climb nights, kickball and women’s sports crowds. If you are going out rather than swiping, Old Town Chinatown between Burnside and Davis is the late cluster, and the Pearl District next to it is dinner.
