AltScene’s sign up panel puts its pitch in one sentence: “Don’t be fooled by other dating sites who offer free sign up but want you to pay to communicate, we are one of the only truly 100% free alternative dating sites.” Read the site’s own terms and there is no payment language in them at all. The thing it does ask of you sits in the same document, and it is not money. Your profile is public, and a profile page opens without anybody logging in.
What AltScene Actually Is
It is a niche dating site for the alternative music subcultures, and it describes its own crowd in its own words: “So if you’re a single punk, emo, rocker, skater, metalhead or anything in between why not give us a go, there’s bound to be someone who shares your tastes!” The homepage headline reads “The 100% Free Alternative Dating Site”. What Signing Up Costs You
Nothing, in money. AltScene has one legal document, its terms page, and it contains no payment, subscription, refund, credit, premium, upgrade or price language of any kind. There is no billing page, no cancellation deadline and no card descriptor, because there is nothing to charge for. The site says messaging is included and unlimited, which is its claim about its own product rather than something a document settles.
What it does ask for is spelled out in those same terms. Under the public data heading they state that “your profile data (including your age, gender, location, sexuality and uploaded photos) will be publicly viewable including to non member of the site, and may be found via 3rd party search engines”. No setting is described anywhere in the document that changes that, and an individual profile page on the site opens and renders for a visitor who is not logged in.
Getting out is self service. The contact page FAQ points account deletion at altscene.com/account/delete while you are signed in, and there is no subscription to stop first. The terms add that an account counts as inactive once you have not logged in to it for a period of five years.
Reading The Terms And The Register
The terms name their own operator at the top of the document. The definitions block gives “We / Us” as Coda Digital Limited and prints “Company Registration No: 08564515”, with “Registered in the UK (England)” beneath it. There is no fictitious profile clause in that document, and no entertainment purposes clause either. What the paperwork does say about photographs is short: “Photos uploaded may not contain nudity or adult content.” The contact page FAQ goes further on who gets removed, stating that “the most common reasons for real accounts being deleted are that you are under 18 or were using fake photos on your profile”.
